How Much Money Is Your Inability to Prospect
Costing Your Business?
It’s that time of day – time to make calls for your business. You are ready to move to the next level. The recession has hit but you’re eager to succeed regardless of the economic conditions. You know you have to reach more prospects because “People aren’t spending at the rate they used to.”
You have blocked time for prospecting only to find yourself surfing the net, on Facebook, getting another cup of coffee or even cleaning your work space. Perhaps you prepare for an upcoming presentation or read some literature about new products. Slowly the day passes and you end up frustrated, guilt ridden and anxious because you haven’t made the necessary calls to move your business forward. You started the prospecting session with the best intentions but the calls weren’t made and the stacks of business cards you should be calling remain nicely organized in your desk drawer.
When the day ends you rationalize why you never got to the calls. This temporarily soothes your frustration. You then create a plan for making calls the next day and you “pump yourself up” for it. The next day comes and the cycle continues. You intend to make calls but you find yourself doing all you can to avoid it. Another day goes by. Your frustration gets worse and the feelings of guilt are growing. Slowly it becomes more and more draining to work your business. Your energy is depleted, your stress level regarding prospecting becomes unbearable and your business income starts to decrease.
You head to your team meeting and you hear of others that are having success and you secretly envy them. When they ask you how your doing you come up with excuses as to why sales are alluding you. You start to see your dream of a successful business start to fade and you hear yourself rationalizing the mediocrity you have in your life. You go back to life as you know it because “it’s comfortable” and “things are good.”
If you have felt like this before you’re not alone. Research shows that 80%of all salespeople and direct sellers FAIL due to insufficient prospecting activity. Truth of the matter is we all “intend” to prospect but many of us let fear STOP us from picking up the phone.
When I started my career in sales I faced similar feelings of fear. I was worried people would find me “pushy” or “too aggressive”. I also made decisions of who wasn’t interested prior to calling them. I had thoughts like “They wouldn’t be interested in what I’m selling.” Or “I can’t believe Chris went into sales. He had a good career going as a teacher.”
All of these thoughts sabotaged my ability to prospect and in less than a year I found myself on the hot seat. The company I represented was very numbers driven and they wouldn’t tolerate mediocrity.
Fortunately, I discovered a system to overcome my fear.
With this system, I soon tripled my call activity. The results were immediate and life changing. I went from being on the hot seat to qualifying for my first sales conference. But that’s not all. I qualified for three straight sales conferences and found myself in the top 10% of all salespeople in my industry. It was a rapid transformation from below average to highly successful.
So let me ask you:
If you answer yes to these questions, I have something special for you.
